Tyra Banks and Vivica A. Fox Speak On the Fabulosity of KimoraAmid the usual chaos backstage at Baby Phat, Jada Yuan managed to catch up with not only label designer Kimora Lee Simmons, but also Tyra Banks, Robert Verdi, Star Jones, and Vivica A. Fox, who each testified to Kimora’s “fabulosity,” as Fox put it. “Kimora is big, she’s over-the-top, she’s a grande dame,” said Banks; “she taught me ‘off the hook’ and ‘off the chain’ — and the chain is actually diamonds, when it’s Kimora’s chain,” added Verdi. Indeed. Watch the video for more.

Baby Phat Invents ‘Understated Bling’Only at Baby Phat could black-on-black nails embellished with black crystals be considered low-key. But as Creative Nail Design co-founder Jan Arnold explained backstage before the show, Kimora Lee Simmons decided to go with an “understated bling” look this year. Now there’s a contradiction. New York Magazine Beauty Editor Aja Mangum also caught up with MAC’s Nadine Luke, who expanded further on the show’s makeup theme — “it’s 1920s but a modern 1920s, so instead of a flapper girl, she’s a flippin’ girl.” Watch the video to see the nails and the makeup close up.

Video: Inside Derek Lam’s Studio Derek Lam invited New York’s fashion director Harriet Mays Powell to his studio, and our cameras tagged along. Will Lam use lace for fall 2008? Or will he go with embroidery and pleating? It’s all out on his design table, but Lam wouldn’t get specific beyond admitting that purple and green are his favorite colors. But his fashion philosophy is worth remembering: “If a woman feels comfortable in her skin, then she’s the best-dressed one out there.” For more advice from Derek Lam, watch the video. Nicky Hilton’s Muse Is Her Jewelry BoxComparatively quiet socialite Nicky Hilton debuted her Nicholai line last night, and New York was there to catch the magic both on the runway and behind the scenes. Nicky’s big sis Paris wasn’t present (was getting mocked by Sarah Silverman at the VMAs really that preferable?), but her proud parents were right by her side — mom Kathy was quite literally “speechless” at her daughter’s accomplishment. As for the collection itself, Nicky drew her inspiration from bling. See for yourself how it all played out.

At Alexander Wang, Party-Girl Style Stays Simple and SexyAja Mangum, New York’s tireless beauty editor, has hit the shows yet again, this time scoping out the hotness backstage at Alexander Wang. According to makeup artist Dick Page, the styling was inspired by “street girls au naturel.” No, he didn’t mean hooker-chic (damn!), but more the look of a glam gal out on the town. Think textured hair, some “murk in the eye,” a bit of bronzer —; and voilà! The show was also styled by former model Erin Wasson, who summed up Dick’s work in one word: “amazing.” See it to believe it, people.
