Monday-Morning Quarterbacking: Oscars Edition! The annual parade of gowns down the Oscars’ red carpet last night was a big-time bore; no one looked absolutely dazzling. And no one looked absolutely dreadful, unless you count Ryan Seacrest. Though there was also Colin Farrell … But we digress! We don’t understand why more stars don’t wear fashionable things to the Oscars. This year’s numerous solid-colored silk gowns harkened back to prom, per usual, but thank God for Marion Cotillard, who at least livened things up a little bit. The Guardian called her Jean Paul Gaultier fish gown “creepy,” while the Telegraph called it a “winner.” Finally, controversy! The postshow fashion analysis, along with our own takeaway,

Red-Carpet Moments: When Ryan Met Anne and MarchesaLast night, the celebrities performed their international duties, allowing themselves to be prodded down the red carpet like bedazzled cattle on parade for our unabashed sass and scrutiny.

The Fug Girls Present Their Biannual Fashion Week Awards for the Fourth TimeJust when we thought Fashion Week held no more surprises, we discovered that, as usual, we were wrong. After all, if sharing air space with K-Fed, J.Lo, and Liza Minnelli (L.Mi?) wasn’t enough to shake us out of our jaded, hard-hearted cynicism for a moment, nothing is. And though the last eight days were often exhausting and occasionally eye-crossing, they were also, as ever, tremendously fun. Here are a few highlights:

Critics Hail Marchesa and Marc by Marc JacobsPerhaps giddy from the unseasonable weather, critics were warm to Michael Kors and Rodarte and practically red-hot with lust for Marchesa and Marc by Marc Jacobs. Consider these adjectives (used in reviews) in order of increasing positivity: “almost camp,” “high-polish,” and “exuberant.” Find out which designer drove critics to the thesaurus in our review roundup.

Jennifer Lopez Is Really Fugging Pregnant!Eliza Dushku officially learned the hard way the First Rule of Fashion Week: Don’t arrive at the same time as J.Lo does. When we noticed Dushku and her brother Nate at Wednesday’s Marchesa presentation, we scampered over to check out her dress and then completely forgot about her the second we noticed La Lopez and her svelte hand warmer, Marc Anthony, a mere two feet away.

Slow Down, Strike a PoseFashion Week will always be hectic. But some designers gave editors a break from having to frantically crane their necks just to catch a model soaring down the runway. They offered up static presentations where you could — gasp! — actually see the clothes.
Anna Wintour Wants Marchesa All to HerselfAnna Wintour demanded a private, pre-show viewing from Marchesa, making for a mannequin scramble — and hasty makeup jobs. Quelle horreur!
André Leon Talley’s Fashion Week Picks Part II: Crashing Into a Radar of American Elegance
Earlier this week, André Leon Talley rhapsodized to us about Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta. We caught up with him at Vera Wang to get his updated assessment of the week — just click the links to see the looks. And he’s still wearing “The New American Dream” Baby Phat coat the Fug Girls loved so much.
What else have you liked this week?
Marchesa, J.Mendel, and Michael Kors all hit a new radar—they crashed into a radar of American elegance.

Girls of a FeatherFrom left: Sari Gueron, Marchesa, Thakoon.Getty Images and Imaxtree.com
Feathers are lending a touch of exotic whimsy to the fall collections. Sari Gueron added edge to her sweeping black evening gown with tuffs of black feathers at the neck and hemline. Thakoon punched up his cocktail attire with a feathered knee-length skirt. Marchesa’s plumage — the most understated — was offered along the bust for a beautiful, swanlike effect. And while Rock & Republic’s Muppet dress did offer an entire skirt made of peacock fringe, it’s good to remember less is more.

Blooming ForthNo spring season is complete without flowers. But designers are going beyond the usual floral print and instead using appliqués or, more ingeniously, molding the outfit into a flower shape.
